The Nerdy CEO presents Black Women Who Lead Series: Introducing Dr. Jennifer Whitmon

Presents Dr. Jennifer Whitmon

Tell Us What Do You Do?

I am a Microbiologist by training with experience in infectious diseases, diagnostics, lab systems, biosafety, and quality management. I have worked in three infectious centers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). I am currently a Laboratory Safety Manager within a National Center at the CDC. I am the primary point of contact between various offices and our center laboratories with over 200 lab staff. I am responsible for the implementation and evaluation of sound scientific and safety-related laboratory practices. I use my knowledge of general and specialized safety and occupational health practices, methods, and techniques that I learned while working in the laboratory as a microbiologist for over twenty years. In a nutshell, I make sure laboratory staff are safe while at work. In addition to my position at CDC, I serve as an Adjunct Faculty member at Touro University Worldwide, I teach healthcare courses within the School of Business and Edith Neumann School of Health and Human Services programs. I am also a certified health coach who focuses on food and how it is linked to health. I give clients strategies for eating healthy along with Christian inspiration.

Please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?

I have always had a love for science and wanted to become a primary care physician. I pursued a Biology degree as an undergraduate at Alabama State University. While there, I had the unique opportunity to participate in formal scientific research projects in the fields of microbiology and immunology. Participating in research summer internships at the University of Southern Mississippi and the University of Wisconsin at Madison increased my desire to do research in the field of microbiology. As a graduate student at Clark Atlanta University (CAU), in the Master of Science degree program in Biology, I conducted research in viral immunology. After year two of graduate school, I accepted a position at the CDC as a contractor to work on respiratory bacterial pathogen study in an infectious disease laboratory. I later returned to CAU and completed a degree in Master of Arts degree in Science Education. I worked as contractor at CDC, then became a permanent employee and conducted clinical diagnostic research on exotic parasitic diseases, basic research in entomology and later returned to work with bacterial pathogens. Many of cutting-edge techniques and procedures, I learned while completing research projects as an undergraduate and graduate student. After more than twenty years (including contractor time) and going back to school to complete a doctorate in Health Science with a global health focus, I left the laboratory and moved into a science management biosafety leadership position at the agency.

What are some of the most important values you demonstrate as a leader?ย

Some important values I demonstrate as a leader are vision, inspiration, and mentorship. While I worked for many years in the laboratory at CDC, I had numerous opportunities to work with employees such as, junior level scientists, fellows, and students. I assisted them with not only their laboratory projects but found myself giving personal advice and career guidance. Years later, many of the former employees came back to visit or sent me notes stating how I helped them to make better decisions regarding school, career, or their personal lives. After multiple former employees reached back to contact me over time, I realized I was helping them cast vision, inspired them to do great things and I was being a mentor. At that point, I realized I had a gift for guiding others. One of my mentees once said to me, โ€œI feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders when our conversations are over.โ€ That compliment made me aware of my values and importance as a leader.

What has been the biggest challenge throughout your career trajectory that you’ve had to overcome?

I have overcome so many challenges in my career. I would say my biggest challenge that I had to overcome throughout my career trajectory was been being pigeon-holed. Being pigeon-holed means, not being able to advance to higher positions based on your existing set of skills. In most of the positions, I have held, I have conducted basic research and development or clinical diagnostic research. As I sought to leave the โ€œbenchโ€ and advance to administrative, management or leadership positions, I realized I did not have the skill sets to progress. To overcome these challenges, I was able to take training courses, but not able to do the required hands on work. What helped me to learn additional skills was being open to volunteer for various projects within and outside of my workplace. I also decided to go back to school at an older age and pursue a doctorate. It took me ten years to find the perfect degree program. What I mean is I was married with a family and needed to find a suitable degree that would benefit me in my career and other endeavors I wanted to pursue. Going back was one of the hardest things I have ever done, but also the most rewarding.

Can you give an example of your own personal experience with failure? How were you able to overcome it?

Wow, thatโ€™s a good question. I have so many examples, so hereโ€™s one. Before I pursued a career as a scientist, I aspired to go to medical school and become a primary care physician. Being raised in a small town in Alabama with few role models in STEM fields, I thought being a medical doctor was the only gainful career I could pursue. So, I applied to medical school and was not accepted. Because of the denial, I thought I had failed. Years later, after receiving my doctorate in health science with a concentration in global health, I was given an opportunity to teach a healthcare course to medical doctors. What I thought was failure, was God guiding me to a different path than what I thought was for me. What I learned was to not give up on your dreams but find another route to success, which may not look like what you had originally planned.

Heroes: What past leader you have worked with/ for you really admire and why?

One of my mentors and former supervisor was Dr. Jacquelyn Sampson, a research microbiologist at the CDC. Dr. Sampson who is now retired, is a brilliant African American female scientist who held numerous scientific patents. What I admire most about Dr. Sampson was that she was not only a dedicated scientist, and international expert in respiratory infectious diseases, but she was also a wife, mother and eventually a grandmother, who moved through life with grace, class, poise, and dignity. I learned so much from her, not only about our infectious disease studies but also things like navigating the agency to the importance of work-life balance. I am so grateful to have worked with her for over ten years and to have remained in touch with her after her retirement.

What are some of the top qualities and traits that you think is needed in order to succeed?

Some of the top qualities and traits I think you need to succeed are emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and good communication skills. Emotional intelligence is the ability to be aware of your emotions. Also, being able to control your emotions (when needed) and be aware of the emotions of others. Emotional intelligence doesnโ€™t mean hiding your emotions or not having feelings, but it does mean managing your emotions and not being led by them. This trait also means you can show empathy and compassion for others. Self-awareness is related to emotional intelligence, it means knowing who you are, what your needs and values are. Being self-aware helps you to get help when needed and it also lets you know if you can help someone else or if you need additional resources. Self-awareness helps you to lead and even to be a team player. A final trait is that one needs to succeed is good communication. Good communication refers to oral and written communication as well as good listening skills. Another area of communication refers to non-verbal communication. Our voices and facial expressions can relay messages and your body can be displaying a different message.

Any major accomplishments you would like to share?

In my professional career, I am proud to have collaborated with scientists and contributed to the scientific literature by publishing scientific research articles, a book chapter and a patent. However, a major accomplishment was the writing and release of my Christian health book entitled “Put That Fried Chicken Down, Five Simple Steps for Southerners to Jumpstart Their Health Journey.โ€ My book will help you to increase awareness of your diet, learn why you have poor eating habits, learn practical skills and strategies to improve your eating habits.

What’s your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their career and life?

Don’t be afraid to take positive risks in your career and life. Pursue your degree, start a business or non-profit organization, apply for the new position, you get the idea. You never want to look back over your life and say “I wish I would have done…” At times fear will creep in to try to stop you from achieving your goals and dreams, but you must put fear to rest by pressing through and starting something new. My favorite scripture verse is Isaiah 43:19. It reads, Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

The Nerdy CEO presents: Women in STEM Series Introducing Field Applications Scientist, Cheryl Bell

Introducing Dr. Cheryl Bell

Tell us what do you do?

I am a field applications scientist at Molecular Devices. In a nutshell, our company sells scientific research equipment to advance health through drug discovery. The product that I cover is a high-end microscope that can reduce the time it takes a scientist to generate data from days to minutes. I support the sales team by demoing, training, and providing seminars on our products.

ย

What is your educational background?

I have a BS in Biology from Jackson State University; a MS and PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology with a focus in Genetics and Genomics from the University of Connecticut; and I completed postdoctoral training at the University of Pittsburgh.

ย

Why a STEM major?

As a child, I was fascinated by how the body works. Specifically, how a person could be healthy one minute, and chronically sick the next morning. When I started undergrad as a Biology/Pre-med major, I planned to become a medical doctor to help people combat disease. After graduating, I decided to pursue graduate school with the intent of making a more profound impact on the health field by becoming a scientist who could pinpoint the cause and cure for disease.

Can you briefly explain the importance of a higher education?

ย For me, higher education has been the alternative to the bootstraps that I never inherited from my ancestors. When you leave an institution of higher learning, you should not only leave with knowledge and expertise in a particular subject, but you should also take with you a community/village of those who supported you in launching yourself to a new state a being: being in new rooms that were previously inaccessible, being in new tax brackets, being the head and not the tail, being held to a higher level of respect. Education can open doors for you that you never new existed.

ย

Heroes: Who else deserves credit and has played a meaningful role in your life and/or career?

Naming every individual who has touched my life in a meaningful way could not be contained in a newsletter, it requires its own book(s). If I had a top 3 pick of naming names:

  1. My mother, Lillian Howell Bell-White, who champions education to this day. She has never missed a beat in encouraging and supporting her children (which is every child in the world) to be the greatest that they can imagine.
  2. Dr. Ruth Washington, a mentor and a friend, who since the day that I met her in 2006 has walked by my side from graduate school to my postdoc to my first “real job” providing wisdom, writing letters of recommendation, and being a sounding board when times got tough.
  3. The late Dr. Lee Aggison Jr., to whom I owe my Ph.D., as he stood in the gap for me when I didn’t even know that my options were divided. For that I’m forever grateful.

Skills from childhood: What are some important skill-sets to develop that you think is necessary to have in life??

Reading: I have always been an avid reader. This has helped me tremendously in growing my vocabulary, helping me to tease out important facts quickly, and figuring out the meaning in messages through context clues. All are important skills for a scientist.

Socialization: As a child, my mother made sure that my siblings and I were always occupied in some activity or another. Being socialized from an early age meant that I do not fear public speaking, I network naturally, and I am not afraid to speak up for what I want and need.

Being inquisitive: Kids are always asking, “Why?” I was no exception and continue to probe until this day. Can you guess why I am really good at being a scientist? (*Hint: Scientific Method)

Staying Motivated: How do you stay motivated when times get tough?

My children are my major motivators. My children have been by my side throughout my academics and my career, watching every moment unfold. I know that I am an in-house role model and that they will remember what I did more than what I said. I want them to remember me as being built Ford-tough and that they have the same DNA inside of them to be the same way.

What is your definition of success?

Success to me is waking up every morning and being completely fulfilled with your life in its current state.

ย

Any major accomplishments you would like to share?

My biggest accomplishment was earning a Ph.D. as a single mother of 3. ย I achieved this goal while putting forth maximum effort, which resulted in an award for the best 3-minute thesis and the honor of sharing my research on national and international platforms, while simultaneously maintaining a teaching load throughout my academic career.

ย

If you could tell your younger self ONE thing, what would it be?

Shoot for the stars and you’ll always surpass the moon!

ย

One piece of advice you would give to up and coming aspiring students majoring in STEM?

Write the vision, make it plain, and never lose sight of your goals!

Meet Dr. Robin Walker

Meet Dr. Robin Walker

Tell us what do you do?ย

I am a Program Manager for U. S. Army S&T Acquisitions in the Medical Research and Development Command. In other words, I assist in the development of medical/technological solutions that assist the warfighter on the battlefield.

ย ย

What is your educational background?

I have a Ph.D. in Plant Molecular Biology/ Biochemistry from the University of Connecticut, ย Storrs, CT and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Medgar Evers College CUNY, New York City.

ย

Why a STEM major?

I was always great in the sciences. In High school, I won the science award for the best academic performer in my entire graduating class. I then realized I had a passion for science and cultivated my passion throughout college and beyond. I also saw very few women of color in STEM fields. It motivates me continuously to be a role model for others that want to pursue this career path.

Can you briefly explain the importance of a higher education?

A higher education can afford you opportunities that would not be available to you without the higher education degree. For example, my current position requires that the incumbent possess a PHD. Higher education also allows you to focus on a specific topic area and become an expert in that topic area. The more education you have in some fields like STEM the more financial compensation you can demand.

ย ย

Heroes: Who else deserves credit and has played a meaningful role in your life and/or career?

My heroes are a slew of teachers in high school who pushed me to reach my potential. I also acknowledge several professors in undergrad and grad school who assisted in my growth as a scientist and a contributor to numerous bodies of work that informed others on newly discovered information. I also salute my mom who worked tirelessly for years guiding me and promoting my love for science through the years of my education.

Skills from childhood: What are some important skill-sets to develop that you think is necessary to have in life??

I developed over the years a technique to help me retain information which consisted of me writing out notes and drawing diagrams. This technique is similar to generating a study guide that can be tailored to an individualโ€™s specific learning style. Itโ€™s worked for me from grade school all the way through grad school. Study skills, time management, and setting goals will always be a toolset that will promote success.

Staying Motivated: How do you stay motivated when times get tough?

ย I always pray, meditate, and keep my mind on my target goals. These steps keep me grounded and help me stay focused on my ultimate goals for life. I also have support teams consisting of friends and family that help build me up when Iโ€™m feeling down.

What is your definition of success?

Success is accomplishing the goals that you have set for your life. Everyone has their own set of goals and only that individual can define if theyโ€™ve achieved those goals.

ย

Any major accomplishments you would like to share?

Outside of finishing my degree, one other major accomplishment was becoming a mother. Itโ€™s a great joy to have an awesome experience to impact another personโ€™s life. Iโ€™m so grateful to have the chance to pour into his life and assist him in accomplishing his life goals.

If you could tell your younger self ONE thing, what would it be?

I would say keep your eyes on the prize. Do not lose focus on others who will come as a distraction in your life.

ย

One piece of advice you would give to up and coming aspiring students majoring in STEM?

I would tell all future STEM students to focus on topics you that hold your interest. Find out early what path you are seeking to take in this journey. I would also advise them to seek out a mentor and establish a support group for themselves. This will assist them greatly in achieving success.

This blog post is dedicated to highlighting some amazing women in STEM who are trailblazers in their respective professions.ย  From scientists, to professors, and biomedical engineers, these women bring in fresh perspectives, talent, and creativity.ย  They continue to break barriers even till this day, which serves as a reminder that women and girls play a critical role in science and technology.

The Nerdy CEO presents: Women in STEM Series Introducing Public Health Scientist, Dr. Katie Bowden

Introducing Dr. Katie Bowden

Tell us what do you do?

ย I am the serology section lead in the Parasitic Diseases Branch at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). I oversee 4 employees within a section that performs three different types of blood tests to diagnose 14 different parasitic diseases. Since we work on patient samples, our tests are certified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and the College of American Pathologists (CAP). Additionally, I work closely with branch-level epidemiologists for consultation when information is requested about our assays. I also work with branch-level researchers to use novel and innovative technologies to improve and expand the tests we perform.

ย

What is your educational background?

I have a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and a PhD in Genetics, both from the University of Georgia. My primary focus of my undergraduate and graduate research was microbial genetics and molecular biology.

ย

Why a STEM major?

When I was a toddler, I wanted to be a surgeon. I originally decided to pursue a degree that would allow me to attend medical school, but I ย later chose to go into infectious disease research after taking a microbiology course that I was fascinated with. During my junior year of undergrad, I ended up changing my major from Biology to Microbiology, with intentions on attending graduate school.

ย

Can you briefly explain the importance of a higher education?

A higher education is something no one can take away from you. I have been through many positions in my life and the one thing that has provided a foundation for success at all of them was my education.

ย

Heroes: Who else deserves credit and has played a meaningful role in your life and/or career?

My father was a huge inspiration throughout my entire life. He always taught me to find a career that I loved and was passionate about. ย My father sacrificed a lot for our family and inspired me to become the independent, self-sufficient, successful woman that I have become.ย

ย

Skills from childhood: What are some important skill-sets to develop that you think is necessary to have in life?ย

Critical thinking, time management, flexibility and interpersonal skills are extremely important. Critical thinking will allow you to tackle any challenge you face.

Time management and flexibility, provides you the abilities to be efficient with your time, work smarter, and also manage unforeseen situations that arise that could have major impacts on your work.

I have always been interested in psychology and understanding different personality types and what motivates different types of people have both helped me become a better supervisor for my staff.

Staying Motivated: How do you stay motivated when times get tough?

I try to move past the small stuff and focus on the bigger picture. Usually things get tough when I get stuck in the weeds and put focus and attention on little things that don’t have that great of an impact on the bigger picture. It can be so easy to lose track of our goals and sometimes ourselves. When you focus on the prize, you’ll be able to move in the direction that’s best for you.

ย

What is your definition of success?

Success to me means creating a life that will allow you to keep growing as a person and in your career. Having that ability will make your possibilities endless.

ย

Any major accomplishments you would like to share?

I am very proud that, in my 7 years at CDC coming straight from my PhD, I have become a full-time employee and obtained a position where I get to manage some amazingly brilliant people that teach me new things every day. I am truly blessed and extremely grateful for these accomplishments and the people that have helped me along the way.ย

ย

If you could tell your younger self ONE thing, what would it be?

Do what you love, don’t let anyone tell you what you can, can’t, should, or shouldn’t do.

ย

One piece of advice you would give to up and coming aspiring students majoring in STEM?

Never be afraid to learn, even if it is from a mistake you make. I used to be terrified of messing up and now I see it as a learning opportunity and I truly embrace those moments.

Higher education gives a person an opportunity to succeed in todayโ€™s global economy. Modern colleges and universities provide their students with various programs aimed at preparing them for different economic sectors and more focused careers that require specialized training (i.e. Engineering, Medicine, Law, Finance).

Heroes: Who else deserves credit and has played a meaningful role in your life and/or career?

My mom played a pivotal role in my success. She taught me that what I learn, no one can ever take from me. What I learn, I own and can use it to my benefit. She also taught me that I can do and be anything. Most importantly, on my hardest days, she never let me quit.

ย

Skills from childhood: What are some important skill-sets to develop that you think is necessary to have in life?

1. Research things for yourself, don’t just take someone’s word.

2. Dig into the details. There’s so much more than what lies on the surface.

3. Never be afraid to take the road less traveled. There are often undiscovered gems along the way.

4. If there is not an opportunity, create one.

5. Don’t quit. If you feel you can’t do something, find a way or make a way.

6. Be honest when you don’t know something and find out what you need to know. That’s how you learn.

Staying Motivated: How do you stay motivated when times get tough?ย

I think about the generations of people that came before me to lay the foundation for the opportunities that are afforded to me. My achievements are not just for me and my family, they are for my ancestors and my future generations.

What is your definition of success?

Attaining self-fulfillment and walking in your purpose, on purpose, while reaching back to help others.

Any major accomplishments you would like to share?

While I have had several accomplishments over the past few years in my career; one that I can say I am most proud of is being the first African American Engineer at a previous employer. I was in complete awe that people wanted to come see who I was because I was a unicorn. ๐Ÿ™‚ It melted my heart to have older women hug me saying how proud they were of me that I had made history.

ย

If you could tell your younger self ONE thing, what would it be?

Your dreams are never too big and never impossible. Just figure out how to make them happen. Most importantly, seek God’s direction for your purpose. He will direct your path.

ย

Why a STEM major?ย

Growing up, the measure of success in my neighborhood was becoming a doctor or a lawyer. I was always good at math, but science came naturally (I never had to study or work hard at it), so seeing that I was interested in medicine and how it is used to help heal people, I thought Iโ€™d give Biology a try.

Can you briefly explain the importance of a higher education?ย

I live by the mantra that the one thing no one can ever take from you is your education (knowledge). They can cast you into a box based on your life experiences, and doubt your abilities, but when you can back things with concrete evidence noting will refute it.

Heroes: Who else deserves credit and has played a meaningful role in your life and/or career?

Aside from family, Dr. Lee A. Aggison, Jr. – the first person to introduce me to independent laboratory research and build my self-confidence. Dr. Ruth A. A black female excelling in a male dominated field.

Skills from childhood: What are some important skill-sets to develop that you think is necessary to have in life??

ย

Learn to fail; it’s OK โ€“ I came across a sign one day which read: FAIL = First Attempt In Learning. Thereโ€™s no way you can know everything about something thatโ€™s being introduced for the first time. Donโ€™t exhaust your energy trying to please others. This is YOUR life, so go after whatever it is that YOU desire. Donโ€™t just wish for it but work for it! โ€œIf you want something youโ€™ve never had. You must be willing to do something youโ€™ve never done.โ€ – Unknown

Staying Motivated: How do you stay motivated when times get tough?ย

I remember those who have helped me get to where I am today. In me asking how can I ever repay you, the only response Iโ€™ve ever received is to pay it forward. Make sure you help someone in every way imaginable to attain their highest potential.

What is your definition of success?

During graduate school, I had a hand made sign on my desk: Success is 99% failure. So, success to me is commitment, perseverance, determination. It is not merely a measure of you โ€œmaking itโ€ – which is what I thought as a child, but the continual pursuit of being better. Having the wherewithal to know that success is an evolutionary process whose path changes as you grow.

Top 8 Online Business Ideas for 2020

Top 8 Online Businesses To Start in 2020 & Why

Anyone can start a money-making online businessโ€”anyone with a computer, that is. And hereโ€™s the catch:ย  essentially no business or marketing experience is needed and best of all, you donโ€™t need a lot of startup capital.

ย

In todayโ€™s world, there are plenty of tools and resources you can use to build an online business that makes the technical work a lot easier than it was in the past.ย  In fact, you can get many internet businesses up and running with zero to little costs because so many free services simplify the process.

ย

Do you have the urge to start a business but not sure as to what business to start?ย  You have a million ideas and youโ€™re having a hard time getting them out of your head and implementing them.ย  What I have found is that coming up with a good business idea is often one of the hardest hurdles for most women.

Women are increasingly seeing entrepreneurship as a compelling alternative if a career path appears stunted and every single day more and more women are wanting to start online businesses and be their own boss.ย  According to the Harvard Business Review, there are 126 million women entrepreneurs impacting the global economy and that number is expected to grow exponentially in the years to come.ย  Women are looking to leave their daily grinds for something thatโ€™s exciting and feeds their passion.ย  I often times speak with women who talk about their hopes and dreams of creating a business but not sure as to where to begin.

If youโ€™re looking to start a business and need some ideas, here Iโ€™m sharing the Top 8 Online Businesses that women are killing the game in and how you should get started in 2020.

1. Start a Blog and Monetize It

Blogging is one of the fastest growing business trends on the internet. ย I personally believe that anyone can create a successful, inspiring, and profitable blog if theyโ€™re willing to put in the work, remain dedicated and consistent, and always keep learning how to do things better.ย  Starting a blog isnโ€™t as difficult as it may seem. However, there are still a lot of people that do not know how to get started. Most of them end up spending a lot of money without achieving the desired result they need.

My decision to starting my online business and learning how to blog and begin making money from it (on the side of my full-time job), is what led me to building this platform and eventually helping others do the same.ย  Here on my website, I walk you through my easy to follow step-by-step instructions to starting an attractive and professional looking blog and getting readers to love your content. ย It will require a little work on your part and a very small amount of money, but if you dedicate the time and effort now, you will be set on a path that can lead you in the direction you never thought was possible.

There are thousands of bloggers out there who make six figures and sometimes seven by writing about their passion, experience, and/or expertise.

Here are a few popular blogs that I like to read often: xoNecole, The Huffington Post, Ruth Soukupโ€™s Living Well Spending Less.

2. Affiliate Marketing in 2020: What It Is and How You Can Get Started

At its core, affiliate marketing has been around for ages.ย  In the grand scheme of things, it is the process of earning a commission by promoting other peopleโ€™s (or companyโ€™s) products. You find a product you like, promote it to others and earn a piece of the profit for each sale that you make.

Affiliate marketing is a wonderful business opportunity.ย  Besides, the list of reasons to do affiliate marketing and the benefits of it are nearly endless and here are three:

1. THEREโ€™S NO FULFILLMENT

When you make an affiliate sale, you donโ€™t have to do anything. The product owner handles all the fulfillment. That means there are NO emails to send, NO refunds to process, NO logins to reset, and NO customer service. You get to serve your tribe without all the hassle. Easy right?

2.ย  THEREโ€™S NO RISK

If you set out to create a physical product, there is an inherent risk. Most of your expenses are front-end expenses, meaning you pay them whether you make any money or not. With affiliate marketing, on the other hand, you typically have little front end expenses (or none at all). How awesome is that?

3.ย  YOU DONโ€™T HAVE TO WAIT TO MONETIZE

Selling your own products takes a LOT of time. Time to learn what people want. Time to package the product (physically or digitally). Time to create marketing materials. It takes time, more time, and time after that. Unlike your products, however, you can start monetizing your platform from day one with affiliate marketing.

3. Start an Ecommerce Business

Over the past several years, Ecommerce has transformed how people buy and sell online. The Internet provides a fast and easy way for people to purchase things without having to visit an actual store. ย An online store can reach customers anywhere in the world. In fact, online shopping has become so popular that many vendors sell only online with no physical location.

If you are quite the fashionista that loves prints and color pallets and you want to be your own boss all while working from home, consider starting an online clothing boutique. If you donโ€™t want to deal with managing inventory or owning a warehouse to store products, you can even consider Dropshipping.

What is Dropshipping?

Dropshipping allows a business to operate without maintaining inventory, owning a warehouse to store their products, or even having to ship their products to their customers themselves. How it works is that the retailer partners up with a dropship supplier that manufactures and/or warehouses products, packages the products, and ships them directly to the retailerโ€™s customer, on the retailerโ€™s behalf.

In simpler terms:

  • The customer places an order for a product on the retailerโ€™s online store.
  • The retailer automatically or manually forwards the order and customer details to the drop-ship supplier.
  • The drop-ship supplier packages and ships the order directly to the customer in the retailerโ€™s name.

With this route, less capital is required and the biggest advantage to drop-shipping is that it’s possible to launch an eCommerce store without having to invest thousands of dollars in inventory up front.

Platforms such as Printify, Oberlo, Printful, and Shopify makes starting an online boutique super easy.

4. Professional Coaching and Consultations

Professional Coaching and/or Consulting has been getting a lot of attention recently.ย  It has the opportunity to create wealth, and it’s very easy to get off the ground. With coaching and consulting businesses, I’ve seen people make plenty of money without a ton of experience.

Coaching and consulting are both extremely fun business models that allow entrepreneurs to help others to grow something and/or make massive changes in their lives. It can be for individuals, teams, and organizations in the workplace.ย  Thereโ€™s evidence that shows that itโ€™s a powerful development approach that leads to positive change, results and excellent source of income.ย  Thereโ€™s no greater feeling than knowing a client of yours succeeded.

However, in order to be a successful coach, you must have a concrete personal brand, vision, and message that captures your clientele and that speaks to their biggest wants, needs, and desires.ย  So if you consider yourself an expert or are passionate about something, you can certainly convert your expertise into some serious cash.

You can offer 1:1 private coaching or consulting services, and exchange dollars for hours. Or, to leverage your time, increase your hourly income, and reach more people, you can offer services in a group format. You can also build online products such as e-books or courses. With those, the work is โ€˜front-loaded,โ€™ meaning you do a lot of work up front, but can then collect income for a long period of time.

Below I have listed several types of coaching/consulting businesses.ย ย

  1. Business Coaching & Consulting
  2. Career & Professional Development
  3. Corporate/Organizational Coaching & Consulting
  4. Life/Success Coaching
  5. Productivity Consulting
  6. Coaching & Training for Professional Organizers

The time has never been better to start an online businessย as a coach or consultant. When you bring your expertise online, you can reach people around the world and influenceย many more people than you could in a traditional business.

5. Freelancer Virtual Assistant

Want to put your organization and communication skills to work from the comfort of your own home? The good news is that busy professionals need your help โ€” and are willing to pay for it.ย  As a virtual assistant, you could make a successful career out of helping people and businesses with data entry, social media management, website maintenance, research, customer service and more.ย  Websites like Fiverr, Upwork, and FreeUp are great for finding freelance virtual assistants in various locations and are great for project-based tasks.ย

As a freelance virtual assistant, you can make as little as $400 and as high as $1500 per month. Because there are differences in costs of living, virtual assistants located in the US or in the UK will cost more.

ย

My Personal Experience with Freelance Virtual Assistants

Some of my best virtual hires have been freelancers that I have used on Fiverr.ย  Iโ€™ve worked with quite a few just within the past year on a variety of projects including graphics, content writing and editing, and web development and have been thoroughly pleased with the services rendered and customer satisfaction.

If interested in starting your own freelance Virtual Assistant business, below are a list of go-to services for connecting freelancers with business opportunities:

  • Fiverr โ€“ great a la carte platform for one-off tasks and projects.
  • Upwork โ€“ great to find specialized skills and longer-term hires.
  • FreeeUp โ€“ great to quickly connect with pre-vetted professionals.

6. How to Start a Podcast for Fun & for Profit

Given podcasts’ ability to attract and keep an audience, it’s no surprise that business owners, entrepreneurs and marketers are looking to capitalize on the popularity of this platform. ย More people are listening to podcasts than ever before, and it keeps growing every year.ย  As a podcaster, you can position yourself as an expert on a particular topic, which will help you influence clients and customers in ways that encourage them to purchase your products and services, invest in your business, or promote you to their peers. ย A podcast generates money for the creator via advertisements, affiliate marketing, sponsorships, donations, premium content, as well as selling your own products. Listeners can also pay to get access to ongoing podcasts, bonus material, and extra episodes.

ย

Podcasting is a fun way to connect with your audience, promote your business, and showcase your expertise.ย  Below I list out 8 simple steps you need to take in order to start a successful podcast.

ย

If you have a business or brand and youโ€™re trying to build, itโ€™s important to look at all of the different ways you can communicate to your audience and podcasting happens to be a great avenue to do so.ย

7. Motivational Speaking

Is being a motivational speaker your next career opportunity? When you think about your lifeโ€™s journey, have you considered what youโ€™ve done? Have you defied the odds? If so, motivational speaking is a great way to tell your story and actually get paid to for it.ย

Motivational speakers are communication professionals who speak about their life experiences. Their messages are meant to inspire, motivate, inform, advise, and benefit listeners. As a part of my platform, I offer motivational speaking as a service to tell my story as a scientist, as a black woman in STEM, and how I started The Nerdy CEO.

In order to become a great motivational speaker, you should brainstorm about experiences and events that will grasp the attention of a large or small audience. The idea is to have a message that is valuable to the listeners. Ask, why do people want to hear what I have to say? Make sure that the audience can relate to and appreciate the message. If the message is unique and motivating, people will happily pay money to hear what you have to say.

Motivational speakers speak at corporate events, professional meetings, government functions, schools, resorts, and conventions.ย  I personally have spoken at a variety of different venues, from K-12 schools to colleges and universities, and community organizations.ย

Public speaking is not for everyone. Some people have a fear of public speaking while others get severe butterflies. Some people can only speak to an audience if they imagine the crowd totally naked. Being a motivational speaker is challenging work that demands a confident, honest, educated, and articulate individual with a warm personality.

8. Selling Handmade Goods

It is not uncommon to turn a hobby into a business. In fact, more and more people are considering this as another stream of income. Selling handmade items online is a great way to be both creative and run your own business. The craft and handmade items community has grown from a relatively small niche to a full-grown online industry in the past several years from selling clothing and other fabrics, fragrance items (i.e. soaps, oils, and candles), jewelry, pastries, and wood products.

If you have ever thought about selling your crafts or turning your crafting passion into a part-time or full-time business, there are things to consider in how to start a craft business.ย  You will have to research the most profitable crafts to make and sell.ย  You want to make sure that your product is marketable, in demand, and cost-effective to make.

Typically no special permits are needed for you to make your goods or crafts at home as long as you do not disrupt your neighbors. However, if you live in a residential area, and suppliers, delivery services, and buyers regularly come and go from your home, you might need a special license.

If you decide to sell your items online, you will need a website and a host. To sell physical goods, you will need a service that can securely handle e-commerce transactions and credit card or PayPal processing.

Alternatively and/or additionally, you can sell your crafts on sites like Etsy,ย  Amazon, eBay, and many others. At these sites, you register as a merchant and pay some combination of a participation fee to list a product and a โ€œclosingโ€ fee when you actually sell something.

A clear plan is essential for success as an entrepreneur. It will help you map out the specifics of your business and discover some unknowns.ย  The overall objective is to start a business that fills a need and a few important topics to consider are:

  • What are the startup and ongoing costs?
  • Who is your target market?
  • How long it will take you to break even?
  • What will you name your business?

Most people who are just starting out make the mistake of looking for a product first, and a market second.ย  To boost your chances of success, start with a market. The trick is to find a group of people who are searching for a solution to a problem, but not finding many results.

The internet makes this kind of market research easy:

  • Visit online forums to see what questions people ask and what problems they’re trying to solve.
  • Do keyword research to find keywords that a lot of people are searching, but don’t have a ton of competition with other sites.
  • Check out your potential competitors by visiting their sites and taking note of what they’re doing to fill the demand. Then you can use what you’ve learned and create a product for a market that already exists — and do it better than the competition.

I really hope youโ€™ve found this blog post extremely helpful.ย  Most importantly, I hope that it has sparked a fire in you to consider exploring the many options out there.ย  The possibilities are endless.

So Long 2019….I See You 2020!

Oh, hey 2020!!!

WHEW!!! What a YEAR.

The Christmas break is a wonderful time to reflect on your year……..yourย success, your failures, onย the lessons you’ve learned, and victories you’ve won. ย For me, I’ve experienced lessons of excitement, confusion, overwhelm, persistence, and FULFILLMENT.ย

I am beyond excited because I ย finally got started with something that I could call my own and I knew that it would be very fulfilling. ย I will admit this journey hasn’t been easy; some ups, some downs, some lessons learned, some tears, but along with that, also came love, joy, appreciation, and TRUST.

As the year comes to a close, I’m reflecting on the year I have had.

2019: Year in a Nutshell

At the start of 2019, still on maternity leave and NO job, I had a vision that I would start my own business.ย  In fact it was the birth of my daughter that kicked off this whole thing.ย  After going on multiple job interviews and getting ZERO offers, all while sometimes questioning myself yet remaining faithful and patient, I decided to just go for it.ย  I honestly didnโ€™t think I would explore the idea of it until later on. But what led me to wanting to start my own business especially after being unemployed for 10 months was:

  1. Not Waiting Around For Someone To Hire Me or Validate My Unique Talents And Skills.
  2. Establish Generational Wealth and Leave a Legacy For My Children And Family.
  3. Teach My Daughter That We As Women Can Do Anything and Be Anything We Want To Be.

My very own life experiences have inspired me to want to help others pursue their passion and accomplish their goals. More importantly, I want financial freedom and flexibility in my day to day schedule, and more time to do the things I love like spend time with my family and travel.ย  Since February of 2019, I have begun the journey of chasing my dreams to entrepreneurship.ย  I founded and created The Nerdy CEO as a platform to educate and encourage women to pursue and follow their dreams and ensuring that they have the support, resources, self-confidence, and conviction to achieve their goals.ย

In March, I returned back to work full-time as a Scientist all while still chasing the entrepreneurial dream. ย As I was re-adjusting to being back in the workforce after being out on maternity leave, I was silently working on building and developing my brand. ย What I ย learned during this process is that building a business doesn’t just happen overnight. ย It takes dedication, passion, consistency, early mornings, late nights, weekends, discipline, obedience, and most importantly, investing in yourself.

After many early mornings and late nights, I finally announced The Nerdy CEO publicly on my personal social media platforms and launched my website which was super exciting. ย We received so much love and support from many followers.

During the month of July, I released my very first eBooks, Think Like a Boss: The Ultimate Guide to Starting a Business and Whatโ€™s Your Brand 101, which has already been a game changer for many of our readers.ย

Both of these eBooks are filled with:

  • Action steps to get you EXECUTING.
  • A Beginner’s Guide to Starting a Business
  • A Beginner’s Guide to Establishing Your Brand
  • An Extensive List of Free and Paid Online Resources that I personally use for my business.
  • Key Tips to Staying Focused on Your Journey to Success

August was also a busy month because we launched our very first physical product, our โ€œShe Can & She Willโ€ tanks in which was a huge hit as we closed out Summer 2019. ย This tank was created to empower and inspire women to create the life we love and to believe in ourselves. ย Even when you don’t know, believe you can, because you can.

Another highlight for the month of August was our feature in Voyage ATL, an Atlanta based online magazine that shares inspiring stories on up and coming businesses in the metro area.ย  ย It is a platform that fosters collaboration and support for small businesses, independent artists, and entrepreneurs, local institutions, and those that make the city of Atlanta interesting.

Voyage ATL believes in changing the way people spend their money โ€“ rather than spending it with the big, cookie-cutter corporations they want their viewers to spend their money with the independent, creative, local entrepreneurs, small businesses and artists.

We were super excited about the feature as it gave us some exposure by being a new business and the opportunity to expand our network.

Over the course of September and October, I wrote a Career Development Series on a previous blog post What is Career Fulfillment? and on our social feeds providing different tips to help you excel in your career and youโ€™d be amazed at some of the feedback weย received from members in the community in terms of getting promotions and landing new job opportunities. Absolutely AMAZING stuff!!!!

In November, I had the opportunity to be the guest keynote speaker for Year Up Greater Atlanta annual Women’s Conference.ย  Not only was I able to introduce this platform, I was able to tell MY STORY and share my journey with hopes of inspiring the young budding professionals of the organization.ย

Thatโ€™s a lot of BIG things for a small business to accomplish in such a short amount of time!ย  Why am I re-capping all of this?ย  Well as I look back on how much we have accomplished here at the Nerdy CEO in such a short amount of time, I can truly say that I am so thankful for this journey that I am on.ย

None of this happened overnight, but these small wins all have something in common. Something I now spend my time helping other women do. ย I started my own business to help other women follow their passion by discovering their dream careerย or dream business.ย ย It is changingย my life in such a major way that I knew I had to share this others. ย

It is YOU that keeps me going hard EVERY single day.ย  My ultimate goal is to build a company to help people (like you and me) and being dedicated to showing others that anything is possible.ย  Yes, to some this may seem like small progress, but you know what, small wins lead to BIG results.

AND GUESS WHAT?ย  Weโ€™re not stopping here.ย  Weโ€™ve got huge plans for 2020 to take The Nerdy CEO to the next level some of which includes:

  • Expanding our Brand to More Social Media Platforms
  • Career Women Series Recognizing Some Trail Blazing Women in STEM
  • Developing more Local & Global Partnerships
  • Growing our Team
  • Scholarship Give Away to (a graduating high school senior with pursuit of STEM focused major)

And sooo much more!

As we look back at 2019 to see such huge accomplishments in such a short amount of time, I can only imagine what 2020 has in store for us.

What's Your 20/20 Vision?

We are now approaching a new decade, and you’ve probably seen and heard a lot of talk about the year of 2020. ย I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for success, setting my intentions, and manifesting my goals. ย What are some goals you would like to see manifest in 2020?

If you can imagine yourself where you want to be, then creating a vision for your future life not only helps you discover your true desires, it also helps bring them to pass.ย  If youโ€™re reading this blog post, remember you have a purpose to fulfill and it is time to challenge yourself and write your 2020 vision.

ย

  1. Challenge yourself by writing your visionโ€”your goalsโ€”so that you may see them unfold and come to pass.
  2. Challenge yourself by pursuing them.
  3. Challenge yourself by pushing yourself beyond your self-imposed limitations and excuses.ย
  4. Challenge yourself to achieve something specific every week or every month this year.ย
  5. Challenge yourself and go for it. Whatever “it” is, you can and will achieve it. If you go for it. So, “Just do it.”

As we wrap up this final week of the Holidays and this decade, I want to remind you of this magical decade ahead.

My wish for you is to take full advantage of this beautiful time by…

  • Reflecting on the past year
  • Step into those big visions, write them out and make it plain.
  • Feel grounded in your present
  • Plan, dream, and take much-needed rest.

It’s my favorite time of the year for so many reasons, but the BIG dreams that happen during this time always get me energized for the year ahead. ย Whether you have worked with me in one of my programs or are brand new to my tribe- thank you for being part of my community! ย I hope I can help you in 2020 by discovering your passion,ย your dream job, or new business.

Here’s wishing you much success in 2020!
